- Inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles and then trace any leaks from inside the attic. Fall is the time to replace missing shingles and recaulk where plumbing stacks, cable brackets, etc...pentetrate the roof.
- The level of heat in your home is one of personal choice, but here are some guidelines for setting your thermostat for cost effective winter energy management:
Relaxing - 21° C Working or Exercising - 20° C Sleeping or Away for the Day - 18° C Extended Time Away - 16° C
- Install a programmable thermostat so you can automatically keep the temperature a few degrees lower when you are away, at work or home sleeping. You can program the thermostat to boost the temperature an hour or so before you normally come home and before you wake up in the morning.
- The biggest consumer of hot water in your home is the shower whereby older shower heads deliver up to 8 gallons per minute. A shower head that puts out 3 gallons of water or less per minute, which represents an approximate savings of 14,000 gallons per year is money well spent.
- Replace Furnace Filters monthly as recommended by the professionals. Dirty and clogged filters allow for less air to flow through your heating system. Also, if you have not had your system checked out by a professional in a long time, consider calling one in to make sure nothing is going to break down on the coldest day of the year and to ensure the equipment is running efficiently and not wasting fuel.
